Legal action taken over Android malware? Now that's a first.
Over the weekend, six men in Japan were arrested for distributing a malicious Android app through a porn site, according to Japanese newspaper The Daily Yomiuri.
The Trojan was packaged in an app posing as a free video codec. When launched, the virus harvested users' phonebooks, email addresses, and other personal information, and sent them to a remote server. It also displayed a screen every five minutes demanding payment of 99,800 yen, the report said.
Of the 9,252 downloads since December 30, 2011, around 211 people (two percent) fell for the trick and paid a total of 21 million yen ($266,176). This reminds us of why Android is the fastest-growing target for malware writers—high margins. It's cheap and easy to make, and has a massive user base.
In April, McAfee reported a strain of Japanese-language malware in Google Play. The Trojan was packaged in an app promising to show trailers for Japanese video games, anime, and porn. Sophos' Graham Cluley said it is unclear whether or not the two instances are related.
Porn and Malware, They Go TogetherAs we've seen with Internet-based infections, porn is one of the most common ways for attackers to ensnare victims. That's because porn seekers typically go to insecure sites and let down their security-conscious guards. Apparently, it's going the way of mobile as well.
One of the earliest pieces of Android malware, circa 2010, was disguised as a video codec to view pornography. Kaspersky Lab discovered premium rate Trojan aka Trojan-SMS.AndroidOS.FakePlayer.b being distributed through a popular Russian porn site. Once launched, the app would send SMS messages to a premium rate number, which would be billed to the unwitting victim.
In January, F-Secure identified another premium rate Trojan 'Android/FakeRegSMS.B' being distributed through an alleged installer for porn.
